What to expect from Counselling

1.  What is a counsellor?

A counsellor is someone who listens to you and offers a safe environment and unbiased support when you experience difficulties in your life.

A counsellor does not give advice, however, s/he might coach you in some life skills (for example, assertiveness) when appropriate.

2.  If I see a counsellor, does it mean I am ‘nutty’ or have a mental illness?

No, a counsellor usually assists people with everyday issues in their life. But a counsellor may, with your consent, work with other specialists such as a doctor or psychologist, or possibly refer you to other specialist services.

3.  How do I know if I tell the counsellor something it won’t be passed on to someone else?

You are free to choose what information you share with your counsellor.

Information you share with Community Key staff will remain confidential and secure unless:

4.  How do I know if the Counsellor is qualified?

You are free to ask the Counsellor about his/her experience and qualifications. Counsellors in our service are experienced and have professional qualifications. They are members of Professional Associations and are bound within their Association by a Code of Conduct and Ethics. Our counsellors receive Professional Supervision to ensure a high standard of service to clients.

5.  At your first interview

After establishing your eligibility for our Counselling service, you will be asked to sign a counselling registration form.  The form includes details about your privacy, confidentiality, fees and payment, and our cancellation policy.
